Come to our FREE Flood Innovation Centre open day for business and community organisations including access to the Floodmobile property flood resilience demonstrator

We’re excited to welcome businesses and community organisations to the Flood Innovation Centre’s home base on Friday 23 September, where we’re hosting a visit from the Floodmobile as part of its Humber Region tour.

We’re running our open day in two sessions, where we’ve loosely separated Businesses and Community Organisations but you’re welcome to attend whichever is most convenient:

10am – 1pm (including free lunch) for Businesses

12noon – 3pm (including free lunch) for Community Organisations

You will have the opportunity to meet members of the friendly Flood Innovation Centre team as well as special guests, Fola Ogunyoye of TJAY Consultancy Ltd and Mary Dhonau, who has become known as ‘Flood Mary’ for her campaigning work on flood resilience.

Activities are ‘pick-and-mix’ – you may take part in as many as you like. We’re providing a buffet lunch between 12-1pm for all participants, so you’ll also have plenty of networking time.

We will provide an introduction to the kinds of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) used by the University of Hull, with lots of inspiration to take away for your own property, in a brief tour of the Aura Innovation Centre grounds.

We will also offer a short tour of the Aura Innovation Centre, where you’ll have the opportunity to look at the facilities.

The Humber Region is one of the most flood-prone areas of the country, second only to London. The 2007 floods saw over 8,000 households flood in Hull alone. The Flood Innovation Centre at the University of Hull is funded to work with businesses and community groups in the Humber Region and beyond, helping them to understand their flood risk and make their property more resilient to flood. We also help organisations develop new products and services in flood resilience – including construction firms who might want to start installing or maintaining the kinds of measures on show in the Floodmobile.

Floodmobile Tour Locations

Can’t make it to the Aura Innovation Centre on Friday 23 September? Why not come to one of our Floodmobile drop-in sessions in Bilton, Hull or Grimsby. We’re partnering with the local authorities covering each of these locations to ensure that we open up the FloodMobile tour to as many residents as possible. (Our Barton event, scheduled for 19 Sept has been postponed due to the Queen’s funeral.)

These events are operating on a drop-in basis.

  • Tue 20 Sept, Riverhead outside Freshney Place, Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire DN31 1AA (outside the multi-storey car park)
  • Wed 21 Sept, Asda Bilton Car Park, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU11 4AL
  • Thu 22 Sept, Queen Victoria Square, Hull, HU1 3RA

We hope to see you soon!

What can you expect to see inside the Floodmobile?

The Floodmobile showcases a wide range of flood protection and prevention measures, including valves, non-return vales, wall membrane systems with accompanying sump pumps, flooring, wall coverings, alternative skirting boards, self-closing air bricks, periscope covers, recoverable kitchens and flood barriers and doors – including those suitable for listed buildings. The Floodmobile also showcases various types of waterproof plaster and insulation.

Who created the Floodmobile?

The Ox-Cam PFR Pathfinder Project created the Floodmobile, which is one of three DEFRA property flood resilience ‘pathfinder’ projects across the country.

The aim of the Floodmobile is to help raise awareness in communities and businesses of flood risk and PFR measures, in order to increase uptake and improve resilience and recovery; and engage productively with the wider industry to facilitate the promotion and uptake of PFR measures.
